Championing Petroleum Related R&D in Ghana

Overview

The Department of Petroleum Engineering, KNUST, is the leader of oil and gas research and development (R&D) in Ghana. With about 6 ultra-modern research laboratories, at least 11 accomplished research scientist, and strong collaboration with industry and world-class international institutions, the Department is the ideal R&D partner of the Ghana oil and gas industry. Our research scientists and engineers are at the forefront of cutting-edge technologies and robust solutions to challenging problems in the oil and gas industry. Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to excellence, our research scientists have contributed significantly to the body of knowledge in their fields, as evidenced by their extensive publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals.

Strategically, the Department of Petroleum Engineering, KNUST has grouped all its research into two strong research labs that are being developed into two dedicated research centres. The two research labs include the Net-Zero Carbon Emission Lab (NCEL), which has been conceived as a proactive response to the energy transition imperatives within the petroleum, mining, and heavy-duty industries and the Petroleum Research and Entrepreneurship Lab (PREL), which is committed to fostering excellence in oil and gas research and development, providing cutting-edge laboratory services, and extending consultancy expertise to the industry.

NCEL

The Net-Zero Carbon Emission Lab (NCEL) is a specialised research lab under the Department of Petroleum Engineering, KNUST. NCEL is focused on conducting research, development, and innovation (RD&I) related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emission assessment, monitoring, and mitigation. The ultimate goal of NCEL is to deliver advanced RD&I solutions for reliable assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of industrial GHG emissions to assist Ghana to develop a data-driven approach to achieve Net-Zero GHG emissions by 2050, in alignment with the Paris Agreement and UN SDG goal 13.
